Agua Canyon Route - Length: 0.5 miles. Elevation change:
500 ft.
This is a moderate canyon route. It's pretty and not too long.
There is usually some level of deer trails. Although, deer trails
are not consistant and some level of route finding and bush wacking
can be expected. There is usually some water in the creek, especially
in the lower levels.
This makes a nice loop going south on the Arroyo Seco Trail and
then up the next fire road to the Angeles Crest Highway.
Trail head: The canyon is the first canyon past the entrance
gate as you enter the Angeles Crest Highway.
Arroyo Seco Route - Length: 3 miles. Elevation change:
800 ft.
This is a fun canyon. At normal water levels it is not hard. There
is at least one waterfall that is passable without ropes. On a
warm day, there are some good swim holes. However, do not do this
one during high water.
This makes a good loop from Switzer Falls. Go down into the canyon
and continue down canyon. At the end of the route, you will cross
the Arroyo Seco Trail. Take that uphill back to Switzer Falls.
Trail head: Switzer Campground on the Angeles Crest Highway.
Brown Canyon Route - Length: 1 miles. Elevation change:
1600 ft.
This is an exciting rugged canyon that will challenge you. There
are two branches going up hill from the Angeles Crest Highway.
They are challenging with loose rocks, steep climbs, and the occassional
or increasing brush. Both of these can be taken to Mount Lukens
Road.
These two branches join just below the Angeles Crest Highway.
However, there is a waterfall down stream from the highway. You
will need rope and rapelling gear to get to the Arroyo Seco. If
you get to the Arroyo Seco, you can make a loop by taking the
Arroyo Seco Trail north to the Oakwilde Picnic Area and then the
Oakwild Access Trail back up to the Angeles Crest Highway.
Trail head: Brown Canyon is the first main canyon past
the fire station on the Angles Crest Highway. There are two branches
going uphill a short distance apart. They join in one canyon below
the road.
(DCR) Dark Canyon Route - Length: 1 miles. Elevation
change: minor ft.
This is a short traverse trail. It connects the steep trail to
Oakwilde Picnic area to the Dark Canyon Trail where the Dark Canyon
Trail leaves the canyon. It is minimally maintained and can have
short challenging sections.
Trail head: The trail down to Oakwilde has a parking spot
for one car along the Angeles Crest Highway.
Nino Canyon Route - Length: 0.5 miles. Elevation change:
500 ft.
This is a short steep grassy/bushy canyon that has two challenges
in the form of two debris dams. These are easy for the climber
types and may be difficult for others.
This makes a good loop going south on the Arroyo Seco Trail and
then up the fire road to the Angeles Crest Highway.
Trail head: This the second canyon up the Angeles Crest
Highway past the entrance gate.
Pine Canyon Route - Length: 2 miles. Elevation change:
1000 ft.
There are two branches of Pine Canyon that reach Brown Mountain
Road. The northern main branch has challenging bushwacking and
a waterfall that requires rapelling. The southern branch has a
short section of thick bushwacking, followed by moderate bushwacking,
but still has loose ground to traverse. The two branches join
before meeting the Arroyo Seco.
Trail head: The upper end of the canyon is accessible from
Brown Mountain Road, and the lower end is accessible from the
Arroyo Seco.
