Hiking Trails

COLBY CANYON TRAIL - Elevation change: 1420 ft.
This trail starts off paralleling a pretty creek with small pools. It then climbs the dry mountainside to Josephine Saddle. This makes a good loop with Josephine Peak Trail.
Trailhead: Angeles Crest Highway, east of Clear Creek Station, look for a pullout on the left at a canyon entrance.

JOSEPHINE PEAK TRAIL - Elevation change: 1960 ft.
This Forest Service road climbs up from Clear Creek Station. At a junction, the eastern branch goes to Josephine Saddle with connections to Strawberry Peak trails and Colby Canyon Trail. The western branch of the junction goes to Josephine Peak.
Trailhead: The trailhead is located at the junction of Angeles Crest Highway and Angeles Forest Highway (Clear Creek Station).

RED BOX - SWITZER TRAIL
This is a fun short trail that is a section of the Gabriellino trail. It is high enough to be above the smog but is not an excessive drive. The upper end is at Red Box Gap, a saddle where the turnoff to Mount Wilson is located. The lower end is at the Switzer Picnic area, a shady picnic spot on the Arroyo Seco Creek. The trail continues beyond both of these ends. It is used primarily by hikers and mountain bikers.
Trailhead: The lower trailhead is located at the Switzer Picnic Area on the Angeles Crest Highway just beyond the turnoff for the Angeles Forest Highway. The upper trailhead is further up the Angeles Crest Highway at the turnoff for Mount Wilson which is located in Red Box Gap.

STRAWBERRY PEAK CIRCUIT TRAIL
This is a relatively long trail that circles around the north side of Strawberry Peak.
Trailhead: The western end starts from Josephine Saddle. The eastern end starts at Red Box

STRAWBERRY PEAK ROUTE
This trail crosses over the top of Strawberry Peak. It is more gentle to approach from the Red Box side from the Strawberry Peak Circuit Trail. This route follows the ridgeline up to the peak. It will require the use of your hands to climb certain sections on the Josephine Saddle side of the peak.
Trailhead: The steeper western side starts from Josephine Saddle. The more gentle eastern side follows the ridgeline off of the Josephine Circuit trail starting from the Red Box Trailhead.
